Rocker Stapp shaking his old ways

Yahoo! News Australia, March 29 2006

Scott Stapp, frontman for the now-defunct US band Creed, claims to have turned over a new leaf but he's still finding it hard to shed some of his old rock ways.

In the past two months, the now solo singer has been arrested for being drunk at an airport and initiated court proceedings against an adult entertainment company after the release of a sex tape featuring Stapp and five others.

Creed was one of the biggest rock outfits to emerge from the US in the 1990s, selling more than 33 million albums worldwide, with hits such as With Arms Wide Open.

The group went their separate ways in 2004. Stapp said the band's relations were strained.

"Success, money and fame don't definitely bring you joy," Stapp said from Los Angeles ahead of his upcoming Australian tour to promote his new solo album, The Great Divide.

"Creed wasn't the fairytale we all imagined ... we didn't stop and smell the roses enough."

Stapp has attempted to keep a low profile since the split but has attracted the wrong sort of attention in recent months.

After marrying former Miss New York USA winner Jaclyn Nesheiwat in February, the singer was arrested at Los Angeles Airport for being drunk en-route to the couple's honeymoon.

"Me and alcohol don't fit too well," said the father of seven-year-old Jagger from a previous relationship.

"I had to learn the hard way, but I have learned that lesson."

Two days after his wedding, it was revealed that a California adult entertainment company had acquired a 1999 sex tape in which Stapp and fellow musician Kid Rock engaged in sex acts with four groupies.

The issue is the subject of litigation in the US, with Stapp claiming the tape was stolen from his home.

"I can't really comment on what is going on in that right now," he said.

"I will see it through to a resolution."

He said the tape was released to hurt his family.

"Obviously by the timing of that ... putting it out two days after I get married showed some hurtful and resentful feelings," he said.

"But I can't live my life in the past, I can only live my life in the now."

Stapp, 32, arrives in Sydney later this month to play his first solo concerts in Australia.

His tour kicks off at Sydney's Metro Theatre on April 20 before Stapp plays dates in Melbourne and Auckland.
