When Wind-Up Records invited Rock Online.com to host the Creed chat in their New York offices in support of Human Clay, I knew right then that there could only be one title for this event, Creed: Rock Artist of The Decade! This is the description we thought every media outlet should use for one simple reason; The music of Creed invoke emotions so indescribable from within that an instant identity is created, a feeling of one. For the fan, this is what life's for.
We arrived at Windup at about 7:30 pm est, the elevator opened, and a celebration for the release of Human Clay was about to be thrown into full throttle. It was so surreal. I tried to envision what it must be like to be a member of Creed, but couldn't. So, for the next hour and a half, I was stoked that I'd have the chance to live vicariously through them. I was the host for this event. And of all places, we took over the CEO's office of Windup Records and waited till the band arrived. Mark walked in first and we started talking about Human Clay, it was also the soundtrack to conversation. Ten minutes later, Scott Phillips, Brian Marshall, Scott Stapp, and the Windup crew walked in as we were about to start. I must say, this chat has been the highlight for me at RockOnline.com and hope you had just a great time listening or following text. Thanks to all who made this possible, all the great fan questions(over 14,000 were submitted)and a very special thank you to Jill & Sid for arranging the chat. It was sooooo cool.-RJ

Ladies and Gentlemen, CREED!
ShapOklyak asks: I love "Higher"...how did you come about writing it?
ROL_guest: Scott: A long long time ago we were playing a show at a bar, we were doing a sound check. We started playing it, then all of a sudden out comes the chorus to Higher. We kinda forgot about it, then we started to think about it again, and we kind of rewrote it. Everybody loved it.
damnitalltohell asks: Is the 'faceless man' supposed to be Jesus? I kinda got that feeling (especially from the 'his yolk is easy and his burden is light partY).
ROL_guest: Scott: I write these lyrics for myself, and my personal demon, and my personal feelings, are very personal to me. So, if that 's how you hear the song, and that's what it means to me, but I'm not going to elaborate more, because it's personal. But good question.
i_am_an_atheist asks: How has your religious beliefs affected your music?
ROL_guest: Scott S: The thing I think that people misconstrue, is that we're a religious band and I talk about God, because I'm trying to figure out if I believe in it.
whiskey_and_a_gyro asks: Mark-what was the first rockin song you mastered on guitar?
ROL_guest: Scott S: I'm still trying to search for that, your much further along in the game then I am.
ROL_guest: Mark: I learned a lot, early on, but the first good song was from Master of Puppets by Metallica
sweetcharade70 asks: Looking forward to the next single from Human Clay already. Any idea which track it will be?
ROL_guest: Creed: "What If" track number 2
ROL_host asks: What is the next single going to be?
ROL_ guest: Scott S: "What If" is the next single and the next video.
damnitalltohell asks: What is your favorite song to play live? (and why?)
ROL_guest: Scott S: I think we all love to play "Unforgiven" It's a good release, it’s a good song to just get things off your chest.
hard_core20 asks: does anything in the world inspire any of your music?
ROL_guest: Scott S: Personal experiences, soul searching.
sweetcharade70 asks: Scott, do your wife and son travel with you on the road?
ROL_guest: Scott S: I'm not married anymore.
dwanesue asks: Hi Guys. What made you decide to keep Young Grow Old off the Human Clay CD?
ROL_guest:Creed: We try to put together albums, that flow from the 1st song to the last song. We wrote Young Old, that grew from the last song. It's a great song, a great concept, we love to play it live, but it's a song that would be on the b-side.
Couduroy21 asks: guys, how did you get the name "Human Clay" for the album?
ROL_guest: Scott S: Molding you as a person, it’s about growing and developing as person. How we're all unfinished pieces of clay, being molded, we're all that, and it felt like an appropriate title.
damnitalltohell asks: What exactly is never die about?? It sounds really down and dreary, but the lyrics seem to be quite the opposite...
ROL_guest: Scott S: It's about holding onto you. The music kinda holds that tone of loosing your youth. I'm not going to let go of youth. I'm going to hold it forever.
ztaylor_9889 asks: I was wondering since I'm a very dedicated guitar player that if you will be using drop d tuning as regular as u do on the first album...cuz it gives your playing an awesome sound.
ROL_guest: Mark: The whole album is drop-d. Most of the 2nd album is.
VirgosF11 asks: Mark, what's your favorite song to play?
ROL_guest: Mark: "Unforgiven”
Prodigy339 asks: Why was Our Lady Peace chosen as an opening act for you upcoming tour?
ROL_guest: Creed: Cause we like the band, we thought they would be a good compliment for a Creed show, It's going to be a great show. It's still an indie tour, and will take a while to bond.
ROL_guest: Scott S: The mention that I make in My Own Prison, is the prison that I was living in. Dealing with my beliefs and whether I believed in it or not. It just consumed my mind. But we're not a Christian band.
SlayerRob asks: Scott, some have compared you to Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam...what do you think of that comparison?
VirgosF11 asks: Brian, who was your main influence?
ROL_guest: Scott S: I'm real, I'm human, it's not about being artsy-fartsy
Brian: John Paul Jones, Led Zepplin
Scott S: Jim Morrison
kapgun2000 asks: I am a bass player in a band, what kind of advice could you give me to make a Mark?
ROL_guest: Brian: work out a lot. I do a lot of what a guitar player is doing. I feel what I'm doing.
Scott: And when it sounds like shit, we tell him to do what the guitar player is doing.(hahaha)
secretoJLC asks: I love that song "With Arms Wide Open". You changed a line in the Cd version, why?
ROL_guest: Creed: I'm not aware that any lines changed. The only difference from the live to cd version is that we added a solo.
buttons_45211 asks: how long have you all been playing together?
ROL_guest: Brian: I met up with Mark and Scott, at the university, and from there they were searching for a rythm section. So Scott P. was brought in. From there it snowballed and hasn't stopped.
seeking_to_be_higher asks: When I first heard the song "Higher"...wow! Beautiful song. I just wanted to know, was there any special inspiration for that song?
ChAiRKoRn asks: what's the best rumor you've ever heard about the band?
ROL_guest:Scott S: We had a show last year, that we cancelled, where Mark was deathly ill. Then a radio station passed around a rumor that he overdosed on drugs.
ba108 asks: what type of guitars do you guys play???
ROL_guest: Howard Smith 6 strings.
ReverandMaynardJamesKeenan asks: After such a successful first album with “My Own Prison”, what kind of goals did you set for the new album?
ROL_guest: Scott S: We didn't have any pressure because we wrote continually. They were written on paper before we went platinum. But once it was all said and done. At the end of the day. We just had growth, and that was our goal. From start to finish they should know the second album will be the same way. A lot of our songs deal with spirituality. Something bigger than man, something epic to write about.
BazookaJoe7 asks: How do we get our questions answered?
ROL_guest:Scott S: Some questions we're never gonna answer. For instance, I don't want to talk anymore about religion. If it speaks to you then it does. But to me it doesn't.
VirgosF11 asks: How was touring with FINGER ELEVEN?
ROL_guest: Creed: They are the best! They are the biggest rock band since Kiss.
Scott: They're a little psychotic.
Mark: They're really good friends and we wish the best for them.
an_angry_chair asks: Will you marry me?
ROL_guest: Scott S: I'm never getting married again. NO. Mark is not married!
Video_killed_The_radio_Star99 asks: What bands that are popular right now do you guys like?
ROL_guest: Creed: Kid Rock! Limp Bizkit. I like the Dixie Chicks, Sevendust
Mark: I don't like the Filter record, NIN new one is great.
damnitalltohell asks: You guys have an awesome website, do any of the band members actually contribute to it (how it looks, etc?)
ROL_guest: Scott S: Actually Brian does it all.
Brian: Windup does it all!
steveoct29 asks: What makes you want to go out and put on the absolute best show you have ever put on? I got to see you a while ago in St. Louis and you were awesome.
ROL_guest: Scott S: Dude, every show is that way. We love playing.
sweetcharade70 asks: If you could take only one CD (of another artist) on the road with you, which one would it be???
ROL_guest: Scott S: U2 Joshua Tree. That's the most amazing album ever written probably. The End or Riders On the Storm, are excellent Doors songs. Master of Puppets man!
DaisyLuv02 asks: Hey Guys. Are you all more proud of this album, Human Clay, than of My Own Prison?
ROL_guest: Creed: Everybody works hard.
ChAiRKoRn asks: Which Creed song would you choose to donate to a compilation album entitled 'crap songs of our time'?
ROL_guest: Creed: We wouldn't call any Creed song that, because no creed song is crap.
creed_aas asks:Who did you intend for the 'Faceless Man' to be/represent?
ROL_guest: Scott S: It's a personal thing. My faceless man is different then yours. It depends on where you are in your life, and what it means to you.
ROL_guest: Mark: It depends on how you hear it.
VirgosF11 asks: Mark did you play your Les Paul on the whole album? Did you use the PRS on some?
ROL_guest: Mark: Yeah, I hooked it up. PRS rules man.
kornman3_2000 asks: Do you guys like playing in Charlotte North Carolina?
ROL_guest: Creed: We loved playing in Charlotte North Carolina. A lot of love, they were so excited. If every night could be like that, then we'd love every day.
MomBombFla asks: What are the advantages and disadvantages of being signed to a small label?
whiskey_and_a_gyro_asks: Creed-doing any signings when in Cleveland 10/10?
ROL_guest: Creed: After the shows.
creep39asks: Dont' you ever get sick of people asking you stupid questions?
ROL_guest: Creed: yes.
ROL_guest: The singer is single!
Cameron_Disc_Man asks: Scott, I was there after the show last night in Fairfax and heard you say to someone that you were pleased with the band's performance, especially yours. Is your voice better now with the tour as a catalyst?
ROL_guest: Scott S: NO my voice gets better as we go. Right now I consider it in spring training, I've been happy with my performance over the last couple of years.
anti_attilla99asks: Please explain the artwork in HC...especially the "weeping" statue on the inside.
ROL_guest: Mark: The band came up with the cross roads thing, and then Scott came back with it. He's a great artist.
fiercepolice asks: what's this life about?
ROL_guest: Scott S: That's the whole thing, you've got to find that out. Find it out for yourself. It's people everyday who wake up and don't give a damn. The person who asked that question is on the right track. I'm here to change the world, and make people think of things in a different way.
creed_fan_2000asks: Who is on the cover of my own prison?
ROL_guest: Brian: Our friend Justin Brown, from Fort Lauderdale.
SlayerRob asks: Did any of you read Dr. Seuss as a kid?
ROL_guest: Scott S: yeah I read doctor Seuss
ROL_guest: Green and ham man.
ROL_guest: I watched it on t.v.
creeddbz asks: Do you guys plan on releasing an acoustic album?
ROL_guest: Creed: Yes, in the next 2or 3 years. We're not sure if we should do it now or wait till the next album. So we're just going to wait and see.
SlayerRob asks: what are your thoughts on the new Ripper Owens led Judas Priest? I personally think they have lost their edge...
ROL_guest: Mark: I'm a big fan, and I couldn't give a judgment on it.
theprivs asks: What ages do you guys range from?
ROL_guest: 21,25?
VirgosF11 asks: Brian what's your favorite concert that you have gone to?
ROL_guest: Mark: Metallica.
Brian: probably Rush.
Prodigy339 asks: Who's playing with you at the Millenium show?
ROL_guest: Creed: We'd like to play with Prince at the Millenium show.
Creed: Led Zepplin is having a reunion show and we're going to open up for them! Hehehe
creed_fan_2000 asks: what's your favorite music video?
ROL_guest: Creed: Cherry Pie! by Warren.
ROL_guest: Creed: Bobby Brown is so hot in that video, hehehe
Thrasher202 asks: I don't really have a question I just had to say you guys are the best band out there!
ROL_guest: Creed: Thanks. Thanks man.
hypoesstess asks: What are your views on animal testing?
ROL_guest: Creed: They're making good make-up. I don't really think about it.
lyric87 asks: is life hard,a personal life, hard to sustain in the fame on the road?
ROL_guest: Scott S: It's very hard to find someone that can deal with your stardom. And the fact that you're gone a lot. So it's hard to maintain a close relationship. It's made our lives much more complicated. As individuals we haven't really changed at all. Taking off all my clothes and running around. I don't do in public.
theoffspring_chick asks: When will Creed do a concert again in Sydney?
ROL_guest: Creed: Probably in Feb. or March.
bland3st asks: Did you shoot a video for 'Higher'
ROL_guest: Creed: yes we did. It's out now.Stay up till 4 in the morning and you'll probably see it.
butterflygirl777 asks: Do you ever hear yourself on the radio and think "WOW!"
ROL guest: Creed: It's awesome, everything we wanted. All our dreams came true. Don't be so concerned about the bands spiritual views. Use it as a form to figure out your own views, cause that's what we're still trying to do as a group.
Prodigy339 asks: Why all the religious lyrics? A lot of people think you guys are a Christian band, but just won't admit it...is that true?
ROL_guest: Creed: (At Once) NO!
dwanesue asks: Scott, the other night on Modern Rock live, you said WAWO was written when you found out you were going to be a father. Did that song adequately describe your feelings at that time?
ROL_guest: Exactly, I couldn't have asked for a better written description then in that song.
VirgosF11 asks: Are you gonna com to Birmingham, AL on your tour?
ROL_guest: Creed: Hell yeah we'll be in Alabama.
SlayerRob asks: Would you ever cover the song Ballroom Blitz, the RIGHT way?
ROL_guest: Creed: No. Because the song sucks. It's too 80's.
ReverandMaynardJamesKeenan asks: Did you guys ever imagine MOP would be 4x Platinum and still growing?
ROL_guest: Creed: We thought we'd get a record deal, sold millions? But now that we've gone through it all, we see how hard it's been.
lil_pornstar_666 asks: What's your best single?
ROL_guest: Creed: I don't know, we think all our songs are good, so it's hard to narrow it down.
metalli_bizkit77 asks: What city is winning the free show contest?
ROL_guest: Creed: It's pending. Basically through all the radio stations in the country, the city with the highest download, it goes by that. Right now its in the audit process.
dmarcucci asks: What are your thoughts on the free trade of MP3s and digital music? Gets your music to more people or hurts sales and the business?
ROL_guest: Creed:It's awesome, people who wouldn't normally get a chance to hear it. But if someone else is making money off of it, then we don't like it.
ROL_guest: Scott S: I don't encourage it. But as long as they're not selling it.
pacificsunwearchic98 asks: I love u Scott
manoval asks: I saw you guys last night at the patriot center...I thought your show was great and thanks for stopping to sign after the show. What's the craziest thing a fan has done for you guys???
ROL_guest: We've gotten a lot of sculptures.
BazzokaJoe7 asks: Mark, how many guitars do you own and which one is your favorite?
ROL_guest: Mark: I have about 10 guitars, and my Bobby Smith signatures I love.
kubrick655321 asks: I'm a big movie fan, could you name some movies you like a lot?
ROL_guest: Creed: Clockwork Orange! The Wall, Excalibur.
creed_fan_2000 asks: Was it fun making the video "higher"?
ROL_guest: Creed: It was more fun making " what if". Higher was 3 days of the same stuff. A better theme, more stuff, different directors, producers.
buttons_45211 asks: where do you see your band in 5 years?
ROL_guest: Scott S: Playing stadiums. Hopefully doing the same thing. We want to grow, make connections with as many people as possible.
ROL_guest: Creed: We want to be the biggest rock band in the world, that's our goal!
damnitalltohell asks: On WTLF on MOP, during the refrain is there more than one person singing, or is it just mixed so that it sounds that way??(as it sounds very different in concert)..
ROL_guest: Scott S: It's just mixed to sound that way. It's basically just my vocals doubled.
theultimatecreedfan asks: Brian, in a concert I saw that you threw your bass across the stage, how long did it take you to master this?
ROL_guest: Brian: About 5 seconds! But I had to perfect the art of keeping my instrument from loosing its value. It seems every time I do that, It gets worse and worse shape. I don't recommend it. Hahaha.
chosen_reject666 asks: Why did MOP take so long to be Released in Britan and when is the new one out?
ROL_guest: Creed: The new one should be out now.
ChAiRKoRn asks: Have you ever been arrested?
ROL_guest: Scott S: I've been fortunate that I'm a very fast runner. And I've gotten away every time. One time I jumped off a second story balcony and ran two miles. They busted the party. But I've never seriously busted the law.
Brian: I've stolen a car stereo.
freaky_marlena asks: What did you think of Woodstock '99?
ROL_guest: We were leaving the concert. We put it on satellite and saw the fire going. The next morning it was total chaos.
freaky_marlena asks: What album are you the most proud of at this point?
ROL_guest: Creed: Right now Human Clay. Because we feel like we're better song writers, musicians.
nO1eman asks: Guys, faceless man is amazing, explain your thoughts behind what you see in yourself in "nature".
ROL_guest: Scott S: Nature in that song is just symbolic of reality. We've had such a change in life, in the past year. It's just a search for things that are real and normal.
SlayerRob asks: What cartoon do you wanna be?
ROL_guest: Batman!
Judge Dred
Wild Coyote
ROL_guest: Mark: no a long time ago, I had it a long time ago.
humancreed asks: Do all of you guys believe in God?
ROL_guest: Yes! But, we're not a Christian.
fret_magic asks: Mark-your guitar playing is the most unique that I have ever heard, today I learned 'what if", I was wondering who was big influences on you when you were learning to play, and are you self-taught?
ROL_guest: My influences were old metal, Anthrax and Slayer.
NeverOblivion asks: What bands do you guys listen to now?
ROL_guest: Same old stuff. Guns 'n Roses...
kubrick655321 asks: Why oh why are you producing the scream 3 soundtrack?
ROL_guest: Creed: One is something we had for a long time, and we decided to do something with it.
It should be hitting right around December.
