You can listen to Scott's interview with Baltimore's Mix 106.5 right here!
JoJo: Scott, you want to introduce that genius next to you?
Scott: That is... ah... Artie. He's a friend of mine. Let's give it up for Artie.
JoJo: Artie, ah, Artie, you've got some incredible skills there, bud.
Artie: I won a contest.
(Scott chuckles in the background )
JoJo: Be Scott's guitarist right? You won that?
Artie: For a week.
JoJo: Be the tenth caller.
Artie: Yep.
(Scott laughs)
JoJo: Where does, ah, where does your songwriting come from? I mean is that, eh, are they each personal experiences, or?
Scott: Yeah, you know it comes from, from whatever's going on in my life, in my heart at the time. You know, I mean, it's the only way I know how to write. It's the only thing that inspires me. And ah, you know usually it's, it has to do with a struggle or... yeah, I mean it's cathartic for me to get these feelings out. And a lot of times it's about where I want to be not where I'm at in terms of the positivity in the music, you know, I, you know. Like for example, in One Last Breath I talk about, you know, being six feet from the edge. That's where I was... but then at the end, I'm like, you know, I still believe there's something left for me. I wasn't there yet, you know, but I was trying to get there. Umm, and so you know, they all come from, from somewhere inside or about something I'm going through or angry at.
JoJo: (to the audience) Any questions? You people are quiet.
Girl: How about your videos? When you do those, do you get to?
Scott: Only one. Only one of the videos I've got a chance to write and direct and that was Sacrifice video. Umm... and ahh, you know, that's something that the label kinda has control over umm, and ah, you know, hopefully that'll change here on my solo record and solo career. But, you know, there's some fine print in contracts, umm, that you sign early on in your career and I got a shot on that video and wouldn't you know that would be the only video we had that was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award. So, umm... what do ya know? But ahh, you know, we'll see.
JoJo: Did it surprise you, I mean, here was Creed, this ahh, you know, this slamming guitar rock band... did it surprise you the radio stations that were playing your music when you found out that like a Hot AC station like ours?
Scott: Not at all. A good song's a good song. You know, and ahh, I think that a lot of times at radio people forget that the public listens to many different kinds of music. You know, from Tupac to Tim McGraw and everything in between. You know, and they forget about that and you know, I think it took us having to go out and prove that by, you know, selling out 20,000 seat arenas and, you know, being number one at every format aside from Top 40 for awhile and Hot AC for awhile, to finally let that format know that hey, your audience is listening to this band. And that happened on Higher in '99.
JoJo: Right.
Scott: And so, uhh, you know, it's... it's...
JoJo: Cause I gotta be honest, I scratched my head when we first started playing it then I understood... I got it and I was glad we were doin' it.
Scott: You know, I think, I think it has something to do with, you know, the way I approach writing music is, if I feel it and I hope it makes other people feel, and if it can make you feel some kind of emotion I think then that's what makes it respond, you know?
JoJo: Next question, ehh, automatically you mentioned Tupac and everything, ehh, what's in your CD player?
Scott: You know, I don't really listen to much music, to be honest with you.
JoJo: 'Scuse me?
Scott: Silence is golden, so to speak. You know, I mean, that's what I do. But ahh, probably Tim McGraw's Greatest Hits is on my boat, which sunk in the hurricane. Umm... Tupac is probably on my boat.
JoJo: Where was it?
Scott: In Miami Bay, in the bay there, you know, right behind my house.
Artie: So if you want it Jojo it's still there?
JoJo: Go down there and get the CDs.
(laughter)
Scott: The insurance company actually came and pulled it out of the water and took it off. But I listen to a wide variety of music when I do listen. But ahh, you know, I don't listen to too much rock unless it's classic unless it's old stuff.
JoJo: Hey it's funny you mention that cause Nelly does a song with Tim McGraw now.
Scott: Yeah, yeah, Nelly has wanted to do a song with everybody. Every time I see him he's like "Hey, you wanna do a song?"
(laughter)
Scott: He's like, we could do like ... (sings) Erebody at the club tonight...
(laughter)
Scott: I can be the background like.... (sings) Ohhhhh...
(laughter)
Scott: You know, so... But ahh, yeah, it was awesome being here guys. And ahh, thanks for taking the time out of your day to come listen to my, listen to me sing these songs you've heard a million times and uh, hopefully you'll be into the solo record out next uh, this Spring coming up and I know you've heard this song. And I gotta get home for a birthday party, to be honest with you. I've got a boy who's turning 6 tomorrow and he's a little sad Daddy's not home right now. And ah, this song's called Arms Wide Open, and I wrote it for him.
